THIRUVATHIRAI KALI

Thiruvathirai Kali Recipe-A traditional recipe as my 50th post.Feeling Happy and Blessed that it came out perfect in my first attempt.

THIRUVAATHIRAI KALI

This is the way Thiruvathirai Kali is prepared by my aunty.

In Kongu Region, Thiruvathirai is considered to be very important day for all the married women. They fast the whole day for lord Shiva and prepare a wide spread of food.In the evening after offering food (padaiyal) to god, they leave the fasting. There are certain recipes that must be a part of the spread.Thiruvathirai kali,Kachayam,7 Kai Kuzhambu.Other than that Rice, Paruppu, Puli Kuzhambu, Rasam, Poriyal, Appalam, Payasam, Vadai, Curd are also prepared. This spread is placed in a banana leaf (vazhai ilai) and offered to god.Let me post a detailed post of how Thiruvathirai should be celebrated in a different post.
Following the measurement exactly as given below would surely give a divine Thiruvathirai Kali.

Ingredients
Raw Rice
1/2 Cup
Moong Dhal
1/4 Cup
Jaggery
3/4 Cup
Grated Coconut
2 tbl spn
Ghee
3/4 Cup
Cashew
10 to 12
Raisin
7 to 8
Salt
A Pinch

Method:
1.In a kadai dry roast raw rice in slow flame till golden brown.Allow it to cool and grind it to a coarse powder. It should be in rava consistency.
2.Cook Moong Dhal.It should not be mushy and also it should not look separated. So my suggestion  is to cook in open pan so that you can remove from heat at the right stage.
3. Grate jaggery. In a tsp of ghee fry cashews and raisin.Keep aside.
4.In a heavy bottomed vessel (or Pressure Cooker) bring about 3 cups of water to boil. Also keep boiling 2 cups of water in another vessel.(While cooking rice,if the water in the heavy bottomed pan is not sufficient you can add this )
5.To the boiling water in heavy bottomed pan add a pinch of salt.Add the coarsely ground rice, constantly stirring to avoid lumps.
6.Allow the rice to cook fully. If water is not sufficient add the boiling water in small quantity. There should not be more water after the rice is cooked.
7.Once the rice is cooked add the powdered jaggery.Jaggery melts and should get combined with the cooked rice.
8.When it starts to thicken add the cooked moong dhal and mix well.
9.Kali should now be soft to touch. At this stage add the ghee and mix well.It should form a mass.
10.Finally add the grated coconut, fried cashews and raisins and give a nice mix.
11.Transfer it to a bowl.
12.Cook 'n' Enjoy

Tip:
1.Be generous in adding ghee as this enhances the taste.
2.As there is ghee, moong dhal, jaggery, coconut this is a very healthy recipe to be given to kids/toddlers.
