MEEN VARUVAL / FISH FRY

Meen Varuval - When you say this, I will get immediately tempted to eat. I love Meen Varuval a lot. This weekend we did this fry and I was the one who ate more compared with others. :)We did not get any ready masala mix from the shop.100 % home made masala and so no worries on health consequences.

Fish is rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, with less cholesterol and fat, a very healthy food. Even if you eat 5 to 6 pieces at a time, fish will not make you feel over filled compared to chicken or mutton

Ingredients

Catla Fish ( Cut into thin Pieces for fry )
1 KG
Corn flour
2 to 3 table spn
Cilli Powder
1 to 2 table spn
Ginger Garlic Paste
1 to 2 tsp
Lemon
1
Salt
To Taste
Oil
To Fry

Method:

1. Clean fish thoroughly and squeeze out excess water.
2. In a pan mix all the above ingredients. Add very little water (1 tbl spn).
3. Apply the paste over each and ever fish piece and keep it in sun light for 15 mins.
4. Turn the pieces to the other side and keep it for another 15 mins so that the spices blends well.
5. *Heat a kadai. Add oil. When it is hot drop the fish pieces one by one. 2 to 3 at a time.
6. Cook in medium to low flame. When one side is cooked turn the fish pieces to the other side and cook.
7. Once the fish is crisp enough take take from the pan and drain the excess oil.
8. Serve hot.

* Instead of deep frying the fish you can shallow fry in a dosa tawa. For this,

5. Heat a dosa tawa. Sprinkle a little oil. When it is hot place the fish piece. When one side is cooked you can see oil popping out of the top side.
6. Now turn the fish piece and sprinkle little oil. When both sides are cooked allow it to turn crispy and then transfer to the plate. This process is little time consuming but does not need much oil.

Tips:

1. Buying fresh fish is more important as consuming old fish may lead to bad health. To check if the fish is fresh check the gills. Gills should be in bright red colour. If it is dull it means the fish is old
2. Fish should be firm enough when touched. If it is not firm and creates an impression when touched it means the fish s Old.
3. The shells and eyes should be glossy as old fish tend to become dull and cloudy over a period of time.
4. Clean the fish with fresh water and then drain the water completely. To this add rock salt and mix well. This removes any excess wastes in the fish. Drain the water and again wash with fresh water
5. For pregnant women eating fish increases the Brain development of the foetus as it has omega 3 fatty acids. But check for the mercury content in fish as it is said more mercury content can cause negative impact in the developing foetus.
